Unlike traditional resurfacing devices, Fraxel is a non-invasive, fractional laser that only treats a portion of the skin at any one time. This vastly reduces the length of downtime and healing for patients, while delivering results.
Fraxel Skin Resurfacing in Guernsey & Jersey
Fraxel is nothing like the laser facial-resurfacing treatments of yesteryear, which required three to four weeks of downtime hiding from your friends.
Fraxel works by causing controlled micro-injury to the skin, and the magic happens during the repair process. Instead of completely destroying the surface of the skin, what occurs with Fraxel is a pixilated-type destruction creating tiny micro-thermal zones. Those areas then stimulate new collagen production. Fraxel targets fine lines and enlarged pores, and can address some pigmentation issues, though there are lasers that are better at eradicating more stubborn dark spots.
Penetrating deep into the dermis, the micro thermal zones eliminate old, pigmented epidermal (surface) cells, creating a controlled trauma to the skin. This triggers the body’s natural healing processes, improving the overall tone and texture of the skin, while targeting concerns such as scarring, laxity, facial lines and wrinkles. It has also been known to improve conditions such as melasma and surface pigmentation, as over time, healthy new rejuvenated luminous skin will reveal itself.
The Fraxel device can be used to treat the face, neck, décolleté, chin and top lip, as well as the chest and hands. It is clinically proven that each treatment session targets 15-20% of the skin’s surface in any one session, meaning successive treatment is required for optimum results. On average, patients will have 3-5 sessions, 28 days apart.
Fraxel is a powerful device that should only be carried out by a medical practitioner, to ensure the correct area is treated, at the correct levels and intensity. All patients at the Aesthetic Skin Clinic undergo a thorough medical consultation to outline concerns, discuss suitability and to receive their bespoke treatment programme.

Treatment at a glance
Mild sunburn sensation for an hour after treatment, redness for about 5 days
Topical numbing cream is applied 60 minutes before treatment
Fraxel is a state of the art treatment for resurfacing skin without the down time of total resurfacing, using traditional invasive lasers. It improves the appearance by affecting only a fraction of the skin at a time, with thousands of microscopic laser spots. The tiny treatment zones of skin are known as micro-thermal zones, and the treatment works by fractional photothermolysis, heating only a tiny fraction of the skin at a time.
The micro thermal zones penetrate deep into the dermis and eliminate old epidermal pigmented cells. The surrounding tissue is left unaffected so the healing time is much faster than if the entire area is resurfaced at once. The natural healing process of the body produces new, healthy and tighter skin cells into the columns where the treated skin cells are sloughed away.
A detailed consultation with your doctor will outline which areas of skin are appropriate for treatment. Because the Fraxel laser treatment spares healthy tissue, it is appropriate for use on the face, neck, chest and hands. It can be used to improve the quality and texture of wrinkled skin especially on the chin, top lip, neck and décolleté area. Pigmentation and melasma are also successfully treated.
Clinical studies suggest that an effective treatment regime is three to five sessions, 28 days apart. Treatment plans can be very flexible, even when spaced weeks or months apart, results are outstanding. Each treatment session targets 15 to 20 % of the skin's surface, outlining the need for successive treatments.
A topical anaesthetic is applied for an hour before treatment. During the treatment you will experience a mild burning sensation across the skin as the laser is passed over the area. This increases with the number of passes, but as the skin is cooled during treatment, is completely tolerable. The levels of treatment can be adjusted to suit patient comfort.
The laser head will be passed over the treatment area in one direction, and then a second pass will be carried out in the opposite direction. A total of 8 to 10 passes will be carried out in total. The skin will be cooled with a fan during treatment, and with cold compresses following treatment.
You will experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour after treatment, then virtually no discomfort. The skin will have a pinkish tone for about 5 days; this is a normal sign that the skin is heeling deeply. Swelling is minimal and resolves in two to three days. Other possible side effects include:
Mild skin infections, Redness, Burns, Scabbing, Blanching, Blisters, Pigment Changes, Itching, Onset of herpes simplex virus.
New epidermal skin develops immediately as the healing process occurs. During healing your skin will have a bronze appearance that lasts from 3 to 14 days depending on the treatment level. Your skin will naturally exfoliate as the reorganised epidermal skin replaces dead tissue. Flaking is similar to that of mild sunburn.
The use of sunscreen following treatment is very important to protect the skin during the healing phase and for several weeks following treatment.
Makeup can be applied after 24 hours, once the initial epidermal healing has occurred.
Aloe Vera gel and cold compresses can be applied following treatment.
The results from this treatment are variable, depending on the original quality of the skin and degree of damage to be treated. The skin will begin to feel smoother and tighter even after the first treatment, but the best results from the treatment will continue to improve for up to six months.
Just a short note to say that I am very pleased with the results of the filler that you used around my mouth yesterday, as well as the usual Botox treatment. I really like the effect especially at the corners of my mouth. Isn’t it amazing how a subtle detail can begin to transform the face!
Thanks for all the treatment and care that you gave me. I very much appreciate it. You gave me so much confidence that I even took my glasses off at the wedding.
From the bottom of my heart or is it the heart of my bottom I want to thank you for helping me look in the mirror without getting upset and being comfortable with what I now see. My grumpy lines look so much better, so thanks. Over the last 10 years you have helped my self-esteem and confidence. I am sure you will understand what I am trying to say is above and beyond a normal thank you.
Just to say thank you so much. The INTRAcel treatment achieved results way beyond my expectations. My skin has improved dramatically and looks absolutely amazing, can’t wait to see the results from a second treatment.
I suffer from acne, along with my sisters and mother. The treatment from the Aesthetic Skin Clinic showed amazing results on my skin within a couple of months, the staff were friendly and understanding. Aesthetic Skin Clinic gave me the chance of living my life again, not hiding away or making excuses to avoid people. Aesthetic Skin Clinic has literally saved me and my family from living a life of being afraid and ashamed of your own reflection.
My story is a simple but powerful one of the amazing results achieved from a Thermage treatment. I was lucky enough to have Dr Curran complete a Thermage facial treatment on me over 4 years ago. 4 years later, I was back in his office for another consultation and Dr Curran showed me my ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos. To my absolute amazement they revealed that after all this time had elapsed I still looked better than the ‘before’ photos.
