Lip filler augmentation has become more popular than ever before, thanks to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner plumping their pouts. Although lip fillers are not a permanent cosmetic procedure, it’s still important to seek advice from a medical professional beforehand. However, if you are considering the procedure, here are 5 things to keep in mind before making a decision.

Keep it Natural

One of the main aims of lip augmentation is to achieve the most natural looking result as possible. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body to keep skin plump and hydrated. With this in mind, Hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane can be used to ensure that a full but natural look is achieved, whilst keeping lips soft and moisturised.

Not only should your lips look natural, but they should also feel soft and natural after the procedure has been done.

Lip Fillers are Temporary

It’s important to be aware that lip fillers don’t achieve permanent results. Although this can vary between people and on the type of substance that is used, lip fillers usually last around 4-6 months before needing a top up to keep up with the desired look or size.

This does have its advantages as your look can be altered and amended over time to suit any change in preferences. People often don’t realise that it can take time to achieve the final lip enhancement look that you want, therefore don’t always expect results to be achieved overnight. The injections can be given gradually during a period of different appointments until the desired look is achieved.

See A Difference Straight Away

Although your desired look is not likely to happen immediately, you will see a difference in the shape of your lips soon after the first procedure. Although it is completely normal to see some swelling and, in some cases, bruising straight after the procedure, you should still be able to see immediate effects. Applying an ice pack can help to reduce the swelling. The time it can take to heal can vary from person to person, although after 24 hours you should be able to see it taking effect.

Preparation is Key

At least a week prior to your appointment, avoid any medication that causes blood thinning such as aspirin, ibuprofen or great amounts of vitamin E supplements to minimise bruising and swelling.

It is also recommended that you take arnica tablets several days before the procedure as these can significantly help to fight the bruising.

Requires Little Downtime

If you are concerned that you may have to take long periods off work after the procedure, then this is certainly not the case.  Lip fillers require very little downtime, enabling you to return to your normal routine soon after the procedure. However, it is recommended to avoid consuming any alcohol and doing any strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours to give the products time to settle and the swelling to calm down.

It is advised that if you have any plans or special occasions coming up, then it’s best to book an appointment 1-2 week before your event takes place, just to ensure that you are 100% healed, ready to show off your natural look.
