Lip filler treatments, just like other dermal fillers, are used to enhance or shape facial features. In this particular case, they plump your lips, correct uneven shapes and smooth out lines (check out our frequently asked questions about this procedure to learn more about what it entails).

This non-surgical treatment has risen in popularity in the past few years, and everything points to it continuing to be as sought after, or more, in 2018. A great part of its appeal is that you don’t need to go under the knife to achieve the plump, pouty lips you desire, as the procedure is merely an injection.

So, we may know why lip fillers are popular, but when did they actually gain so much fame and what can we expect to see this year?

History of the Lip Filler

This procedure is not new. On the contrary, the earliest records of this procedure can be traced back to around 1900, when doctors injected liquid paraffin into lips for the first time – unsurprisingly, this wasn’t the best substance and didn’t work!

Silicone was also used in the 1960s but abandoned decades later due to fears of it being harmful to health, which turned out to be unfounded. Around 1980, bovine collagen began being used but it didn’t last for very long and patients had to be allergy-tested for it.

Currently, Hyaluronic Acid is considered the best solution for lip augmentation, as it offers plumper lips that look natural.

Lip Fillers on the Rise

Back in 2015, Kylie Jenner confessed to having undergone a lip filler procedure, which sparked a rise of 70% in enquiries for this treatment. Because of this, she’s credited with the following boom in lip filler procedures, as this non-surgical treatment rose in popularity and never really dropped after that – it was actually the most popular one in 2016!

More and more people are looking to have plumper lips through lip filler treatments – Ireland, for example, leads the way in terms of online searches for lip fillers and a great number of citizens have undergone cosmetic treatments as well.

This boom is likely to continue in 2018, as non-surgical treatments such as Botox and fillers already account for nine out of ten of these procedures!

Lip Plumping for Men

Men are also getting in on the lip filler wagon. While it’s mostly women who are undergoing this treatment, more men are opting for lip augmentation as well, as seen by a 74% surge of men seeking this procedure between 2015 and 2016.

A Possible New Trend

With the announcement of Megan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry, it seems like we might be moving away from Kylie Jenner’s plumper lips to less pouty ones. This will likely be achieved by injecting smaller amounts of filler than the quantities used, on average, in 2017.

After the royal announcement, Markle became the second most Googled person of 2017, so it’s not that much of a stretch to believe she will be a big health and beauty influencer this year, as well as a trend-setter.
