Lip fillers are an excellent way to plump your lips, perfect your pout, and prevent the visible signs of ageing. However, due to their popularity in recent years, many misconceptions have arisen that have damaged their reputation and created fears and anxieties in people who were once considering the procedure. Whilst they’re not for everyone, lip fillers can make a really positive impact on the right patient.

1.      Lip Fillers Stretch, Meaning They Will Eventually Sag

This common misconception suggests that lip fillers will stretch over time, which means continuous treatment is required to avoid sagging, which is entirely untrue. Unless the lips are overfilled, no stretching will occur, so you do not need to worry about your lips sagging and having to re-fill them regularly. In fact, HA (synthetic hyaluronic acid) found in lip fillers stimulates collagen, which is what gives skin its elasticity, so not only is the statement untrue, it is actually the opposite of what happens when you get lip fillers.

Myth = Debunked.

2.      Lip Fillers Only Last Six Months

Although we would love them to be, lip fillers are not permanent. This means that if you want to sustain your youthful pout, you will need to get top-ups semi-regularly. Years ago, dermal fillers lasted around six months, meaning patients would get their top-ups twice a year. However, industry and product developments in recent years have meant that dermal filler can now last many years, according to many studies.

3.      Lip Fillers Always Give You Big Lips

One of the most damaging misconceptions surrounding lip fillers is that they always give the patient big lips. Although sizing up your pout is an option when it comes to getting dermal fillers, it isn’t a requirement, and many people choose to have lip fillers for several other reasons. For instance, we have had patients choose lip fillers to increase their lip hydration, correct asymmetry, and improve the balance between the top and bottom lip.

Botched lip fillers

If you’ve seen the paparazzi pictures and read the horror stories about over-filled lips in gossip magazines, then we want to put your mind at ease and reassure you that if you choose a reputable clinic such as ourselves, this will not happen to you. We will always advise against overfilling and instead provide our dermal filler treatment following your face shape and existing lip size and in line with your goals. Bigger does not always mean better.

Myth = Debunked.

4.      Anyone Can Have Lip Filler Injections

No, this is not true. Here at Aesthetic Skin Clinic, safety is our number one priority, which is what it should be for any accredited clinician, meaning we understand that not everyone can have lip filler injections. Here are some examples of reasons why we would not allow you to have lip fillers:

  • You are under the age of 18
  • You are pregnant
  • You are breastfeeding
  • You have active cold sores

Following this, everyone has different-sized and shaped lips, which means not everyone will require the same amount and type of filler. Each client is different, and our treatments recognise this and ensure you get what is right for you.

5.      The Type of Filler You Get Determines the Look

There are different lip filler products, each determining how long it will last in the lips and how the lips feel. For example, a thicker product means you will have fuller-looking lips, so this type will be used on those who want a plump pout. In contrast, much softer fillers are available, which are chosen for those wanting more natural results, often when improving asymmetry rather than plumpness. In addition, the high-quality filler will always impact the results, as a good quality product improves the safety of the treatment.

Whilst this all remains true, what determines the look is the practitioner’s skill. You could choose a clinician with the best products available, but if they are inexperienced or unreputable, your results will show this. Choosing ASC for your lip filer treatment is your best option, as we use the best products and are highly experienced in our field.

Myth = Partially debunked.
