When it comes to anti-ageing treatments, there is a wealth of different options available, including both surgical and non-surgical options. Dermal fillers, are one of the most popular non-surgical options for rejuvenating the look of your skin, and have a plumping effect, restoring volume, and giving your skin a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers have in many respects revolutionised the field of aesthetic skin treatments, and offer a great, safe solution to the problem of skin ageing. So here we take a closer look at this revolutionary treatment, and how it could benefit you.

What Are They?

Dermal fillers are a type of non-surgical, injectable treatment used to reduce the appearance of lines and folds, and to restore volume to skin. There are a number of different types of fillers out there. One of the most popular types available are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Here at the Aesthetic Skin Clinic, we utilise both Restylane and Juvederm products, which are both hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. These products offer a number of advantages over alternative dermal filler types and contain no animal derivatives.

What Does The Treatment Involve?

The treatment is both fast, and simple, and involves the injection of a clear gel substance naturally found in the human body known as hylauronic acid which is both fully degradable, and biocompatible, meaning there is virtually no serious risk. Hyaluronic acid is an important natural component of our skin, that has a number of vital functions, such as holding in moisture, aiding in tissue repair, and acting as a cushioning agent. The amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin typically decreases as we age, and this is thought to have a crucial role in the skin ageing process.

How Do They Work?

Unlike Botox injections which relax targeted muscles, in order to soften and smooth the appearance of wrinkles, dermal fillers fill in wrinkles and lines and replace volume lost as a part of the natural ageing process. Once injected, the hyaluronic acid gel integrates itself into the dermal tissue where it acts to support facial structures and tissues, and smooths out the appearance of wrinkles and folds. The gel also binds with water molecules, giving skin a fresh and rejuvenated appearance, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Over time the gel is subsequently degraded by the body’s own natural mechanisms, leaving behind no residue.

Dermal fillers offer immediately observable results, which typically last for a period of 6 months or longer. Research has also suggested that beyond their immediate volumising effects, repeated injection of dermal fillers may even have the potential to aid in the stimulation of the natural production of collagen, an important protein involved in keeping our skin looking firm and supple.

There are a number of areas suitable for treatment using dermal fillers, including the frown lines between your eyes, and the marionette lines around your mouth. Interestingly, dermal fillers can also be used to plump up the volume of thin lips, and increase definition of the lip border.

Here at the Aesthetic Skin Clinic, we have many years of experience of providing a range of cosmetic solutions, and have a number of treatments available to help you to fight the signs of ageing, including dermal fillers. As part of our range of treatments we are also able to offer Thermage in the UK, a non invasive treatment designed to deliver tighter skin.
