As we age, the muscles supporting our eyelids weaken and excess fat may gather above and/or below them, which causes sagging lids and under-eye bags. This can make you look older or disrupt your vision; if this is the case for you, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can help. This simple treatment is one of the most commonly requested surgical procedures and is designed to improve the appearance of your eyelids by reducing drooping, removing eye bags, tightening creases and folds and lifting the skin around the eyes.

We’ve put together a few reasons for people to undergo blepharoplasty, which can help you to decide if this is the right option for you.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

First of all, it’s important to know exactly what eyelid surgery entails.

This quick surgical treatment is carried out by Mr Nick Percival, our award-winning resident surgeon who specialises in facial rejuvenation and who knows how to achieve the natural-looking results you’re after. There are two types of eyelid surgery, upper and lower. Upper blepharoplasty repositions or removes excess skin and tissues around the eyelids and can correct hooded lids as well. Lower blepharoplasty is also usually known as eye bag removal, and it’s also a simple, safe and quick procedure that removes excess fat and skin.

We offer eyelid surgery in Guernsey and eyelid surgery in Jersey, whether as an isolated procedure or as part of face, neck or brow lifts. Performed under local anaesthetic, blepharoplasty has an average duration of 30 minutes for upper eyelids and 40 minutes for lower eyelids. The final result can be expected at around the 6-to-9-month mark.

Why do People Seek Eyelid Surgery?

There are many different reasons why people consider undergoing blepharoplasty. For some patients, eyelid surgery is a cosmetic option while, for others, it’s a necessary procedure to improve quality of life. Neither motive is wrong, and everyone has their own reason to choose blepharoplasty. This quick and simple surgical treatment is popular among both women and men and isn’t exclusive to  older generations.

So, why should you choose blepharoplasty and how can you benefit from this surgical procedure?

Vision Impairment

Drooping eyelids are more common than you think; however, this doesn’t mean you have to accept them, especially if they’re causing health issues by disrupting your vision. Whether this problem is caused by age, an illness, an injury or even a genetic predisposition, you may find yourself needing correction in order to restore normal sight. Blepharoplasty is a very effective way to get the best results and to stop worrying about vision problems.

Rejuvenation

For many, eyelid surgery can restore youth to their eye region. While age-related sagging eyelids may not always impair your vision, it’s likely you won’t be satisfied with their appearance anyway, be it your upper or lower eyelids – or both. Through blepharoplasty, you can address this common ageing issue and improve the look of fine lines, wrinkles and, of course, droopiness. The end result is a subtle, natural look that won’t give people the impression you just had surgery.

Many patients wonder if this procedure can help to improve the appearance of wrinkles; however, even though blepharoplasty targets the upper and lower eye areas, it is not designed for your crow’s feet. Eyelid surgery removes extra skin and fat so, if you wish to smooth out lines and wrinkles around your eyes, we recommend Botox, a non-surgical treatment, instead.

More Confidence

For many patients, blepharoplasty can help them become happier with their appearance. Eyelid surgery can also contribute to a more youthful and vibrant look, which, in turn, can offer patients a boost of confidence and improve their self-esteem.

No matter the reason why you wish to undergo eyelid surgery, the end result will be the same: you’ll become more satisfied with your appearance. After all, even if you require this surgical procedure for medical reasons, you’ll still reap aesthetic benefits.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

It’s crucial that you’re sure of your decision to have blepharoplasty. While our team have years of experience with this surgery, we still believe it’s important that you share your expectations with us early in the process. We can discuss the treatment, the results we’ll achieve and the aftercare you need to consider. In addition, we’ll also talk to you about the downtime associated with blepharoplasty; while this is a simple procedure, it’s still a surgical one, so you will likely see some mild bruising, swelling and tenderness in the area for the first ten days.
