If you’re constantly breaking out into spots and you’re not sure why, it could be a skincare habit that you have, that you haven’t even realised you’re doing. Sometimes a routine that you use every day could be the very reason that you’re frequently suffering with repeated breakouts and bad skin.

As a cosmetic skin clinic in the UK, we constantly see people who have picked up skincare habits that are causing a number of problems with their skin.

Now’s as good a time as any to give up these bad habits so that you can start to see an improvement in your skin.

Read on for our list of some of the things that you could be doing that are unknowingly keeping you from a perfect complexion.

Sleeping with Your Makeup On

This might happen to people once or twice after a good night out, when they fall into bed and forget to take their makeup off. However, for those of you who do it more often, you’re causing unnecessary damage to your skin.

Sleeping in makeup causes your pores and oil glands to clog – and your skin in unable to breathe, regenerate tissue or heal itself. This is when you are more likely to start breaking out into spots.

Picking at Spots

You know it’s wrong, but you just can’t stop yourself from picking at your spots. Every time that you pick at a spot, you’re causing irritation to your skin. Picking skin can lead to the infection spreading superficially and beneath the skin.

It can also cause permanent scarring to the face, as you’re preventing your skin from healing itself.

Constantly Touching Your Face

Just imagine all the germs that come into contact with your hands on a daily basis, no matter how many times that you wash your hands. Now just picture all those germs being transferred to your skin every time you touch your face.

When you touch your face, germs are released onto the skin and into open lesions – which can be a big problem for those who suffer with acne.

It’s not just your fingers that you need to be wary of; your mobile phone is covered in germs. It’s said that your phone probably contains more germs than a toilet seat – and you are transferring them all to your skin when you speak on the phone.

Make sure you wipe down your phone regularly to minimise the spread of germs (or speak on speaker more often!).

Washing Your Face with Hot Water

It’s tempting to turn the show up to boiling temperatures when in the shower, especially when showering on a cold winter morning.

However, facts show that hot water actually dries out the skin quickly, making it extremely itchy. This is why we recommend that you wash your face at the sink instead of in the shower, so that you are not washing it with water that is far too hot.

For best results, wash your face with lukewarm water.
