Obagi Skin Care

Below the skins surface are cells that give skin its smoothness, even colour and firmness. As these cells mature, new ones are made. As a result of skin aging and environmental factors the ability to renew these cells is damaged and cell renewal becomes less efficient, resulting in skin becoming rough, uneven and lacking in tone. The Obagi skin care system works deep down to bring skin cells back to health. It works alongside prescription strength products that effect changes at cellular level to achieve real long lasting results. Skin is transformed, looks radiant and younger as healthy new skin cells reach the surface.

The treatment improves the function of three types of cells : Keratinocytes, Melanocytes and Fibroblasts.

Keratinocytes are the cells found on the skin surface. The products stimulate natural exfoliation of keratinocytes to recapture the skins smooth, moist texture.

Melanocytes contain a pigment called melanin that gives the skin its colour. Treatment with the obagi system corrects the overproduction of melanin caused by sun exposure.

Fibroblasts produce support structures in the skin called collagen and elastin which tend to break down over time. The obagi system helps the skin to preserve collagen and elastin, making it firmer. Surrounding blood circulation improves giving skin a healthy glow.

The system can be tailored to suit any skin type, and follows four basic phases :

Prepare
Wash skin with cleanser and follow with ph neutralising toner

Correct
Areas of uneven pigmentation are corrected with a skin bleaching and exfoliating cream

Stimulate
Keratinocytes and fibroblasts are stimulated and melanocytes are regulated using a retinoid cream

Protect
A high factor sun block is used to protect the skin against any further damage

Out with the old

The Obagi system penetrates to the deepest layer of the skin to correct the signs of aging. Old, dead skin cells are replaced with fresh cells. Reactions such as itching, dryness and redness indicate that your treatment is working. This phase typically lasts for 6 weeks and you will notice visible improvement.

In With The New

Your skin begins producing normal healthy cells that are pushed to the surface faster. Pigment cells begin distributing melanin cells more easily and collagen and elastin production is stimulated. The skin begins to tolerate the products and reactions subside. At the end of this phase your skin will look and feel much improved.
