Hyperhidrosis

Treatment for Excessive Sweating Disorder

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating disorder. Normally the body produces sweat to regulate the body temperature. Sometimes the nerves that control the sweat glands become overactive and excessive sweating is produced. This is usually limited to the armpits, hands and soles of the feet but other areas such as the face, forehead and scalp can be affected. This can have a devastating impact on the quality of life. Treatment with botulinum toxin can dramatically reduce sweating by blocking the nerves to the sweat glands and preventing the release of any sweat in the treated area.

How is treatment given?

An anaesthetic cream is applied for a prolonged period of time to make the procedure more comfortable. Often the physician will map out the area of excessive sweating with a temporary staining agent. The area is then treated with micro amounts of botulinum toxin given by tiny injections with a very fine needle. The area may be slightly red with short lived tenderness which quickly subsides.

How long does it take to reduce sweating?

The reduction of sweating starts to take effect in just one day, but it may take several days to reach its full effect.

How long will results last?

Sweating is usually controlled for 5 to 7 months, when a repeat treatment can be given. There are reports of sweat reduction for up to 14 months though this is not the usual case.

Migraine Treatment with Botulinum Toxin

The benefits of Botulinum Toxin in the treatment of headaches were discovered by accident. Patients having treatment to reduce lines and wrinkles were reporting dramatic reductions in the severity and frequency of headaches.

A scientific, medical paper was published in 2000 confirming the safety and efficiency of Botulinum Toxin in the prevention of migraine headaches. The contraction of forehead muscles contributes to the migraine triggering process, so by relaxing these muscles you are eliminating the trigger.
