Glycolic Acid Peel

Glycolic Acid is one of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (fruit acids). It is a naturally occurring substance, which means it has minimal risks of complications. It can be applied to the skin as a mask or in solution, and causes an exfoliation of the thin top layer of skin. By removing these cells the skin is rejuvenated and has a smoother more glowing appearance.

How Does It Work?

Glycolic Acid peels will remove the top dead layers of skin cells that are responsible for the skin looking dull and dry. Whilst it cannot produce the same results as a deep peel, it will help to improve the quality and texture of the skin and clear clogged pores. The process works by the glycolic acid loosening the glue like substance that holds the epidermal skin cells together, allowing the dead skin cells to flake off.

How Is The Treatment Carried Out?

You will be advised to commence a preparation regime at home two weeks before your peel, consisting of a standby cream in the morning which sets the ph of the skin and familiarises it with glycolic acid, and a vitamin C 20 cream at night. At the time of your peel your face is cleansed and dried and the chosen glycolic mask or solution is applied, using a brush or spatula. The product is left on the skin for two to three minutes and removed using damp flannels. The face is sprayed and dried several times with water, and then the standby cream and sun block are applied

Possible Side Effects

An allergic reaction to the product is possible but rare, and this is why the skin is prepared prior to peeling. Slight redness following treatment is common, along with mild skin flaking. The skin may also experience a mild sunburnt sensation for an hour following treatment.

Will The Procedure Hurt?

When the product is applied to the skin you may experience a tingling and mild stinging sensation. This will pass once the acid has been neutralised by the wet flannels.

What After Care Is Involved?

It is important to use the standby and vitamin C 20 creams for five days following peeling, and to always apply a sun block when going out doors. Make up can be applied to the skin immediately after treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

It is recommended that you have a course of six treatments 2 to 4 weeks apart to see maximum benefit. Intense pulsed light treatments can be combined with glycolic peeling to further improve the quality and appearance of the skin.

What Results Can I Expect To See?

Glycolic acid skin peels will improve the texture of the skin, smoothing fine lines and blemishes and enhancing the overall condition of the complexion. They are compatible with many other treatments enabling a complete rejuvenation of the skin.
