Plastic Surgery: Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift

Excess skin, droopy eyelids and fat pads under the eyes are all signs of skin aging and can add years onto your appearance. These problems can be surgically corrected with minimal invasion and a relatively short recovery time. Surgery can be carried out as a day case, although a brow lift would require a one night stay in hospital. Sutures are removed after 5 days, and bruising may last for up to 2 weeks. Complications are rare, and pain during recovery is minimal and controlled with simple oral analgesia.

Upper eyelid skin can be removed under local anaesthetic. A continuous suture is used, which is hidden in the crease of the eyelid. Lower eyelid surgery can also be performed under local anaesthetic although most patients opt for a general anaesthetic. Again the incision is hidden along the natural line of the lower lid. It is important during the recovery phase to sleep elevated with three pillows to minimise swelling. Complications include swelling, bruising, infection, numbness and cyst formation along the incision line.

Hooding of the eyelids can also be improved by a brow lift. This is performed under general anaesthetic. Incisions are hidden in the hair line and scalp, and surgery is performed using a fibre optic camera and endoscopic technique. Bruising and swelling are common after this procedure, and temporary numbness and paralysis of the forehead can occur.
