Breast Reduction encompasses surgery to lift a sagging breast, and/or reduce the size of the breast. It can be combined with augmentation to define the shape and size of the breast once the excess skin and fat have been removed. The position of the nipple is moved, although the nipple is left attached to the breast tissue during this process, so this surgery does involve a scar around the nipple and down and under the breast. These generally heal to a faint white line within 4 to 6 months. Dissolvable sutures are used, and after care is the same as it is for augmentation. A sports bra will have to be worn for a minimum of 6 weeks, and a bra of the desired size should be brought to the consultation. There will be a degree of pain, swelling and bruising following surgery, but complications are not common. They include poor wound healing, infection, pain, unsightly scars and loss of nipple sensation.
