Plastic Surgery: Abdominal Reduction

The abdominal reduction procedure is performed to remove excess skin and fat on the abdomen. It involves reconstruction of the muscle corset and is often carried out in combination with liposuction. The procedure improves the contour of the abdomen, and removes redundant and overhanging skin. Results will be influenced by skin laxity, weight, age and lifestyle.

Pre operative preparation involves losing as much weight as possible and taking vitamin c and arnica to improve wound healing and reduce bruising. It is also very important to stop aspirin 2 weeks before treatment and to stop smoking as this compromises wound healing.

The procedure involves a one night stay in hospital and a general anaesthetic. Sutures are dissolving, but drains will need to be removed after 5 days, and dressings removed after 10 days. Wounds will heal within 2 to 3 weeks provided there are no complications, but a support garment will need to be worn for 6 weeks. Complications are not common, but include bleeding, bruising, seroma, pain, infection, fat necrosis and numbness.
